#132 – “Opening Bands #2 (The Lavender Menace)”

More fun facts!

Believe it or not, the phrase “Lavender Menace” was coined by none other than the late Betty Friedan, noted second-wave feminist and former president/co-founder of the National Organization for Women.  “Lavender Menace” is a phrase attributed to her about the threat she felt lesbianism posed to the feminist movement as a whole.  She was afraid prominent lesbianism among feminists would stereotype them as “man-haters” and would prevent feminism from making significant political and social change.  Eventually “Lavender Menace” would be used to describe an informal gathering of lesbian feminists who rejected this kind of exclusion.

And of course, I thought this would be the perfect name for a lesbian punk band.  The name even dates back to my “Worst Band Names Ever” comic.  I gotta say designing the band members was perhaps the most fun.  I used photographs and my own memory of Chicago’s recent Gay Pride Parade as reference.  I also thought logically about what a woman would look like if she was completely unconcerned with traditional feminine standards of clothing, dress, and hairstyles.  This is why I gave the drummer a Reverse Mohawk, in my opinion the worst haircut of all time.

Lesbian punk bands aside, I’ve launched a new Desktops section which will contain downloadable wallpapers featuring the “Oh Goodie!” characters.  I’ve already launched my first containing none other than the Filthy F@#$ing Fairies themselves!  Click below if you’d like to download it!
