Funny story: this really happened. Only it was in college and it was during my Comics History class taught by Diana Green, who wrote the foreword to “Oh Goodie! Vol. 1” and has a cameo here as the teacher. Only difference is that Ayn Rand and Objectivism came up in reference to Steve Ditko, particularly with his character The Question, who would later inspire Rorschach in “Watchmen”.
I actually called up Ben, husband to my cousin Melissa and an English teacher himself. I asked him really fast if Ayn Rand would come up seriously in an English or Literature class. His response was simply: “No. Absolutely not.” Hence I decided to have her referenced during a history class on the Russian Revolution and its impact. Figured there she’d at least be mentioned in passing, however full of shit she is.
That in mind, here’s two artists you never thought would be referenced in the same place: Rush and Ani DiFranco! Enjoy!
