I’m not gonna do a full review of “Songs of Innocence” because I honestly don’t have much to say about it. I’ve felt U2’s biggest mistake over the last decade is that they’ve let themselves become rather generic. My favorite album of theirs was “Achtung Baby” while it took U2’s formula up until then and made it weird, it added a lot more emotional rawness on a personal level rather than a political one like their previous works. Releasing an album with a song literally titled “Song For Someone” is like a joke I or someone else would make about generic pop songs. What’s the point of having Apple upload it to everyone’s iPhones if it has no hope of connecting in a personal manner?
It’s a shame though, because I rather like the song “Volcano”. If U2 was trying to blend their style with stark EDM, this had the best pay-off, with a sick bass-line and a danceable beat. Shame they had to sell themselves short with the snoozefest that is the rest of the record.
